Prayers
Members of the Anglican Use Society are encouraged to use The Book of Divine Worship for prayer on a daily basis. For some this means saying Morning Prayer and/or Evening Prayer. Others may not be able to adopt such an ambitious rule of prayer. To fulfill the Simple Rule of Prayer of the Society, the following intercession from The Book of Divine Worship may be used.
The Collect for the Anglican Use
O HOLY Ghost the Lord, who on Pentecost gavest the Church the gift of tongues that Christ might be known, loved and served by peoples of divers nations and customs: watch over the Anglican heritage within thy Church, we pray thee, that, led by thy guidance and strengthened by thy grace, that Use may find such favor in thy sight that its people may increase both in holiness and number, and so show forth thy glory; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Son, one God world without end. Amen.
Prayers from The Book of Divine Worship
Father, we pray for thy holy Catholic Church;
That we all may be one.
Grant that every member of the Church (especially members of the Anglican Use Society) may truly and humbly serve thee;
That thy Name may be glorified by all people.
We pray for our Holy Father, Pope N., for the Ecclesiastical Delegate, N., our bishop, N., and for all bishops, priests, and deacons;
That they may be faithful ministers of thy Word and Sacraments.
We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world;
That they may work for thy peace on earth.
Give us grace to do thy will in all that we undertake;
That our works may find favor in thy sight.
Have compassion on [N. and on] those who suffer from any grief or trouble;
That they may be delivered from their distress.
Give to [N. and to] all the departed eternal rest;
Let light perpetual shine upon them.
We praise thee for the Blessed Virgin Mary, [for Saint N.] and for all thy saints who have entered into joy;
May we also come to share in thy heavenly kingdom.
ALMIGHTY God, to whom our needs are known before we pray:
Help us to ask only those things that are in accordance with thy Will;
and those good thing which we dare not, or in our blindness cannot ask,
grant us for the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
This intercession may be followed by one or more of the following Collects and the Grace.
Morning
O GOD, who art the author of peace and lover of concord, in knowledge
of whom standeth our eternal life, whose service is perfect freedom:
Defend us, thy humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies;
that we, surely trusting in thy defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries;
through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Evening
O GOD, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed:
Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be
set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear
of all enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness;
through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
For the Departed
O GOD, the king of saints, we praise and magnify thy holy Name for all thy servants
who have finished their course in thy faith and fear; for the blessed Virgin Mary;
for the holy patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs;
and for all other thy righteous servants, known to us and unknown, and we beseech
thee that, encouraged by their examples, aided by their prayers, and strengthened
by their fellowship;
we also may be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light through the merits
of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
For a Holy Death
O LORD Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, we pray thee to set thy passion, cross,
and death, between thy judgement and our souls, now and in the hour of our death.
Give mercy and grace to the living, pardon and rest to the dead, and thy holy Church
peace and concord, and to us sinners everlasting life and glory; who with the Father
and the Holy Spirit livest and reignest, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Our Lady
WE beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts, that we who have known
the incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ, announced by an angel to the Virgin Mary,
may by his cross and passion be brought unto the glory of his resurrection; who liveth
and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
The Grace
The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship
of the Holy Ghost be with us all evermore. Amen.
